The aim of YouWriteOn.com is to help all new writers develop and to help talented writers get noticed and published.

To get started simply:

·          Join YouWriteOn.com for free

·          Upload Opening Chapters or Short Stories – novel chapters must be fiction opening chapters between 6,000 to 10,000 words, and fiction short stories between 2,000 to 5,000 words, to qualify for the YouWriteOn Top Ten and a professional critique. You can upload non-opening chapters, but for member feedback only

·          Your chapters once uploaded will be automatically sent out for review to another member. YouWriteOn’s literary professionals have commented on the high quality of stories rated highly by members

·          You can view your ratings after four reviews. You need 5 reviews to enter our chart system. Once you receive your first review, request a Reading Assignment of another members story on your My Page to receive more reviews. Each story you review will award you a reading credit and earn a review back for your story in turn. Assign your reading credits to your stories by clicking on the 'Manage My Reading Credits' button on your My Page. Each time you assign a reading credit it will automatically send your story out for review  View A Star Ratings Example for a highly rated story on YouWriteOn

·          You can remove one unrepresentative review and rating every eight reviews

·          You can edit your story and synopsis as you develop your work through feedback. Click on the pen symbol next to your story on your My Page to edit your story

·          You can request 3 different Reading Assignments and remove one Reading Assignment every 24 hours. Click on the remove button next to a Reading Assignment on your My Page to remove it from your reading list - the story will then be sent out to another reviewer

·          Each month the Top 5 writers in our Top Ten receive a free professional critique from  established authors and editors for leading literary agents and publishers, including Curtis Brown, Orion and Bloomsbury

·          The Top 5 chapters/stories each month enter our Best Sellers Chart. The YouWriteOn Best Sellers Chart is a showcase for the highest rated stories on site. How does the site help me develop my writing and help me come to the notice of publishing professionals?

YouWriteOn.com enables you to get feedback from site members to help develop your writing by its simple ratings premise: you review and rate another member's opening chapters and you get your opening chapters reviewed and rated in turn.

The majority of YouWriteOn writers who rewrite based on their collective feedback are higher rated by readers as a result. Members develop their writing most successfully by not just reading reviews for their own stories, but reviewing constructively and thinking about what works wells and what needs developing in other members stories.

Do I retain all rights to my work and how do I protect my copyright?

Yes. You retain your copyright and all rights to your work. You can be published and be represented by whom you wish. All original works are copyright to an author by virtue of the author having written an original work. You do not have to register your copyright, but can do so if you wish. In the U.S.,you can register your copyright with a copyright service such as the U.S. Copyright Office. In the United Kingdom you can register your copyright with a copyright such as the UK Copyright Service – see http://copyrightservice.co.uk/

The publishing world is more discerning than ever these days, and writers need to consider all the possible advantages of feedback on site. Feedback is a way of helping to develop your story with the possibility of contact with leading literary professionals. In the current publishing climate, we consider that it can be a very useful avenue for writers.

How do I edit my chapters, synopsis or reading test?

To edit your chapters, synopsis or reading test, login and then click on My Page accessible on the right hand column of the home page. Next click on the pen symbol next to your book title on your My Page. This will take you to a page where you can edit your chapters, synopsis, story title and genre.

Alternatively, you can remove the present version of your story and upload a new version if, for example, you have done a rewrite and want your story to be considered afresh by readers. To remove chapters, please click on your My Page, and then click on the pen symbol next to your book title, at the bottom of the page this takes you to is the button to remove chapters.

It's generally very useful to get a range of feedback as this helps point collectively to strengths, and areas that can be improved. Below is some useful advice from the site literary professionals, which can be beneficial for considering reviews:

Criticism has the potential to be both inspiring and fatal .. I’d suggest some rules of thumb. Spend a few days mulling on any criticism before drawing conclusions. If a criticism strikes a chord with you, act on it. If it doesn’t, but if several critics have touched on the same thing, consider very carefully whether to act on it. If a criticism really doesn’t strike a chord, and particularly if no one else has picked up on it, probably ignore it. Lastly, you may find critics evenly divided on an issue, as many pro as con. These are the trickiest to navigate: go with what your instincts tell you.

How does the review exchange system work on YouWriteOn?

To get reviews for your story, simply review another member's story on YouWriteOn.com by requesting a reading assignment on your My Page. The system then sends your story out to be reviewed by another member. Click here to view the Simple Guide to Getting Started

The assignment system prioritizes automatically depending on who has the least readers assigned e.g. those with 0 are assigned first, then those with 1 reader are assigned, etc. This is to ensure a fair balance for members awaiting reviews. Once the system has assigned, it is then in readers hands, and the system will automatically reassign if a reader doesn't review. You can view how many readers are assigned your story by clicking on the stats button next to your story title on your My Page.

Reviews usually come in quickly, but if you are encountering delays you can improve your opportunities to get reviewed by considering your story's appeal from the viewpoint of a reader browsing a bookstore.

Consider the immediate 'look' of your story - such as story synopsis, opening - and imagine it from the point of view of a browser that you want to encourage to read further. You should also consider how your story is presented. If you have not left a line of space between paragraphs then your chapters will be clumped together on the site. To edit your chapters, click on the pen symbol next to your story title on your My Page. This takes you to a page with functions to edit your chapters.

Also, consider the complexity of your reading test - set questions about story events which the readers will generally notice as they go along - remember, they aren't as familiar with your story as you. Questions about character names and places may tend to register less with first time readers of your work. To edit your reading test questions, click on the pen symbol next to your story title on your My Page. If a reader doesn't review after seven days, they are removed which increases the prospect of being assigned to new readers. Each reading credit will lead to a review being received back in turn.
