Thank you for the candid review of my work. Your written review was clear, and I have taken some of the comments to heart.

I would appreciate some clarification on your ratings. I keep track of all reviews and ratings. Just to refresh your recollection, the ratings you gave me were as follows:

Character – 2
Story (plot) – 2
Pace & structure – 2
Use of language – 2
Narrative voice – 1
Dialogue – 2
Settings – 1
Themes & Ideas – 1

Could you provide some insight into your scoring? As an example, I use a specific scale. For pieces of work that have no real structure, no plot, a lack of characters, POV that is inconsistent, and are really just miserable, I would score a “1.” For a piece of work that jumps off the page and I could see on the shelf at any book store, I would score a “5.” Just curious as to how you look at it.

Perhaps it means, at last, that people are using the full range of scores instead of confining themselves to 3-5.

Has that been your experience recently, Nick?

I fortunate. I've always got 1s and 2s!

That'll be why your book's at 16, I suppose... Standard deviation is a wonderful thing.

Thank you for the candid review of my work. Your written review was clear, and I have taken some of the comments to heart.

Just had a quick look at your excerpt and I can understand that you're a bit miffed, especially when you see some reviews that openly reveal they are giving all 5s.
I notice you've just joined. I had exactly the same reaction nearly a year ago when I started.
Fact is there is no common system of scoring. Comapred with the general standard of other pieces on here there's no way yours shd be marked so low.
My system is to work out an overall mark out of 40, then dock off points where I see it as being weakest. Anything over 30 I see as being potentially publishable without too much work.
But that's my system - not much to go by when everybody has their own.
I think too many people are critical abt subjects not being original enough. Just how many can be truly original after various milennia of story telling and half a century of TV?
