Starting from a comment Sulcus made many months ago, I started looking at how I was going to market my book. I had been waiting to see if I was going to find a publisher, or self publish, but I realised that was just prevaricating. I needed to have a way of selling, not just web sites and twitter.
My book is for children, the obvious place to find them is in a school, so I decided upon the strategy to give a talk about writing, or more the motivation behind writing (as I know little about the actual art of writing). A good theory, but could I put it into practice.

Well, I’ve got my notes, a bag full of props and this afternoon I’ll find out. I’m off to a school to talk to a class of 10-11 year olds. I’m not excited, just nervous but determined. If some of you can don a nurse’s uniform, surely I can talk to 30 children

I'm strongly recommending that you don't wear the nurse's uniform for this activity.

Best of luck.

Would be interested to know how you got on, and if any/many sales resulted.

Best of. I admire your courage - this message is probably too late - I reckon you'll be fine, enthusiasm shining through as always, that makes a big difference.

Thanks for your support.
I'm back and still alive!

It went rather well.
First hiccup: it wasn't a class of 30, they brought together all three year six classes; about 90 kids!

They sat well, listened, got involved, asked questions (only a few heckles)

I haven't got a book to sell, so it's hard to measure it's usefulness or success. But it was more about testing myself than my book. In fact I forgot to tell them what my proposed book is called until someone asked. (note for next time)

I did print off 60 bookmarks that have a link to the website. On the website are the first six chapters -if you can find them, at the bottom of that, you can leave an email if you would like to be informed when the book is published. -Now this is a long and tortuous route for people to follow, but anyone who does go to that much trouble, is more than just vaguely interested.

I talked for about 10 minutes, showing them an old compass, a large lump of Magnetite (a lodestone), and a flint and steel.
Then afterwards let them try to start a fire with a bow-drill for a few minutes, then read the first two chapters for 15 minutes.

So now I know I can do it, I'm open for bookings !!

well done, sounds excellent.

I always thought for a kids/YA author to get made, is to somehow get their book on national curricula reading lists
