I'm thrilled Phantasmagoria has gone into the Best Sellers (thanks again to my reviewers) but I have asked Ted not to pass it on for a prof crit.

YWO has to pay for every critique and I feel as my piece is so brief it would be wasted and better used on a longer short.

I've asked that it go to next qualifying short which has not already had a mini crit and whose writer isn't already a November winner with another piece. The aim being to spread the 'prizes' around a bit. At the turn of the month that piece was The End of the Pier Show.

Bless you, Tempy. What a thoughtful gesture. Derek's End Of The Pier story is lovely and it would be great if he could get a prof crit on it.

Very generous of you to spread the prizes around, but it doesn't really save Ted any money, does it? Surely he pays the same whether the story is at the high or low end of the word limit?

It's not intended to save money but to get better value for it.

Shorts only get the mini-appraisal, you know? Still worth having and I'm looking forward to getting mine. Perhaps, being a competition entry, it might compromise you in some way though.

Sue, I know, I had one for The Gilded Cage.

I don't think it would compromise my competition entry and I do think they are worth having which is why I'd rather someone who'd written more than a thousand words had the benefit of it. I've had some great feedback which helped me get Phantasmagoria down to under the required word count and my 'judging' will come in the comp.

Btw, Ted is cool with this and I've flagged it now so no one thinks he's messed up when the crits come in.

Fair enough, your judging will come in the comp.

I'd like to see the professionals take short stories more seriously, and I hate to see a short story writer buying into the idea that there's such a thing as a story too short to merit the professionals' attention. Surely that's not what you mean to convey, or is it?

Perhaps, and perhaps not.

Thanks for clarifying that.
