Title : The story of a little soul
Author : SA Jordan
Genre : Novel, Womens Fiction
Review:
Bloody hell! I felt like I opened a box and a feral cat leapt out.
This is visceral, strong, angry writing, with real originality of language and powerful images. I liked it very much, and found myself liking the narrator more than she likes herself. You manage to nail that inertia, that lack of interest, the willingness to drift, then surprise your reader by having her work at the Samaritans. I am so curious about this woman.
But the best thing about this is the voice, the language and the sense of being entirely in someone's world. Her drinking makes her unreliable, but you show us this through the amused remarks of her colleagues and friends. You also use some gorgeous images, the Sunday like a ginger cat on a sill is bloody brilliant, and if I had no ethics, I'd steal it.
The conversation with her mother is weaker - you 'tell' us how she's feeling. I'd rather hear the conversation and work it out for myself. You reveal too much all at once in that scene.
Lastly, you say you hate punctuation. And I hate reading badly punctuated writing. You have two options. Say '**** it' and write with no punctuation but full stops and capital letters. That would certainly underline the 'don't give a ****' mentality of your narrator. Or get someone who knows what they are doing to proof it for you. But do one or the other. As it is, it's hard to read. That's a shame, because this is one of the most electric an alive things I've read here.
Best of luck and thanks for a really unusual novel.
