Hey folks,

Terry Pratchett and Transworld Publishers are once again running their first novel award, the prize being publication and a GBP 20k advance.

You have a year to get your novel together and get it in there.

Full rules and regs here:

I would highly recommend putting something in. I submitted my novel with no expectation of winning, but somehow it did. It could be your turn next time!

Cheers,
Michael.

Hey, I remember you winning this. So exciting. Can you share with us a little about what's happened since? What have you been up to regarding promotion and interviews etc? Or is all that to come nearer the release date?

I'm totally clueless as to how it all works.

I have to say, it's great of you to come back and mingle.

Hi Chickin,

There isn't too much to report, but I'll give you a rundown on how it's gone so far just to give you an idea of how it works.

Basically, for the first three months or so after I won, very little happened, apart from the book being slowly listed on all the various bookseller websites (Amazon, Waterstones, Foyles, etc) with no information or book cover, and me providing them with a bio, blurb and completed author questionnaire to help plan publicity.

It was only November when it got going. Firstly, the cover, which I totally love and can be viewed here (http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/12925656-apocalypse-cow), was finalized. Then I got some suggestions from my editor, and embarked on a rewrite, which took about two weeks. They were happy with it, so then all I had to do was write acknowledgements and the dedication. Now the book will be copy edited for typos, and then I'll get proofs to approve at some point early next year, I expect, since the publication date is May 10.

I imagine serious publicity won't kick off until close to the release, most likely when they have advance reader copies available. They want me in the UK for two weeks around the release date, but I still don't really know what it entails.

Apart from all that, what has been going on in the background are negotiations to sell foreign rights, which apparently have been going well. But again, nothing has been finalised.

I think that's about it. I guess it will feel more real when I have a copy of the book in my hands, and when there is something to sell. It is available for pre-order on Amazon, but obviously nobody is going to buy a book without even a blurb, so it's just a waiting game at the moment.

Cheers,
Michael.

Gosh it all sounds so exciting. Are you happy having to do interviews and promotions etc? I know we should all be prepared to do so if we want to be published, but I'm shy .

It seems a bit pointless writing under a pseudonym if the old mug shot is going to be all over the local rag.

Do stay in touch and let us know what it's like, how it feels and the negatives - if any.

And many congrats again. Have you started the next one? I'm guessing you're going to want to be hitting them with another fairly quickly. Iron hot and all that.

Hi Chickin,

I'm ok with interviews, etc. I'm a journalist based in Kenya, and have done a bit of punditry on TV and radio already on various bits and bobs, so I'm comfortable talking - although talking about my own work rather than issues may be another matter.

I have started on another book, but I'm not going to rush the publisher. They did ask me if I was working on something else, but it was an offhand question. This book has to get out there first and clock up some sales before minds can turn to further deals, I think. I honestly have no idea how it's going to turn out.

And thanks for the congrats!

Cheers,
Michael.

Hey Michael,

I just noticed this post thank you for bringing it to our attention. I would love to submit something but I think this is a little to early in the day for me. Perhaps next year, if they do it again.

All the best with your novel, hope it does well! :D
