What about the cleaner who "ruined" the work of art thinking it was spillage? Medal material.

Ignorance on her part; bad management on the part of her employer.

What makes you say it was a "she"? Just because the job mentioned was "cleaner"?

These are exactly the kind of preconceptions modern art tries to address. Could a pile of sand trickling across the floor be called art? Stand and look at it long enough and you might see it in a different way. (Yes I know, stand and look at anything long enough and it becomes interesting).

Is that person pushing around a brush and sweeping up others mess because he/she is "ignorant" and doesn't deserve a better job?

Until we start thinking differently about our fellow man/woman and imagine walking a mile in his/her shoes, until we stop pre-judging based on prejudice and ignorance, this world will never change for the better.

Art, including fiction, can change people's view of the world, or at least encourage them to ask questions of themselves and others. There are better ways to do that of course, but art and fiction still contribute, albeit in a small way.

I knew it was a 'she' because I had heard the story on the news a couple of days ago. 'She' was certainly ignorant of the art that 'she' ruined otherwise 'she' would not have ruined it and 'she' had not followed instructions . So, calm down dear and please stop having preconceptions about my preconceptions.

My favourite pile of sand art is 'Pacific' by Yukinori Yanagi. Did you know he used ants to make it? He wrote;

"If the travels of the ant show us anything, it is that he wanders to resume the task he has been programmed to perform, not to acquire freedom."

Ants are, of course, female. So is Yanagi making an ironic statement by calling them 'he' or is he blinded to the realities of the world by his own maleness?

Ah yes, the news - I forgot the media's role in hightlighting the inadequacies of ordinary people so that we more sophisticated types can have a good laugh, in this case at "her" expense. I bet they gave her name and age as well, eh? Just to keep us fully informed.

Mind you, the artist must be secretly delighted, although publicly outraged. All that publicity. Maybe he/she will give the cleaner that medal Perry recommended.

Faulty research, I'd say.
