Hi, i'm new, just joined this month. My story; 'The Kingdom Of Hope' has just enterd the chart at 25. I know i'm not the greatest writer in the world but 25! Has anyone else gone in at that kind of level and progressed up? Strangely, a lot of the stories that I enjoyed reading and reviewing are also in the same reigon. In the 20's. Develop, develop, develop i suppose...

Yes indeed. My first attempts started around that mark too. When you've done some editing after say, a dozen reviews (apart from little things that should be fixed immediately to stop everyone commenting on them), upload a fresh version and watch it fly! Good luck. Sue

Keep working on it. If you persist, you'll get there, either with this piece or another.

Hi there, I am completely confused. I joined a couple of years ago and uploaded a manuscript. After 8 reviews, rating of 3.7 and a low place in the charts, I gave up. Recently I uploaded a new story. Initially ratings were good, 3.9. I revised the chapter on advice of one reader and after 6 reviews now have a rating of 3.6 - worst ever! Am feeling depressed by YouWriteOn. What is the average rating for a Top 10 book? More than 4 I'm sure.

Sorry, me again - My other problem is that I'm writing women's fiction. My harshest critics are always men who talk about 'unnecessary detail', while women say they love my chapters because the are 'evocative'. How can I make sure I've only got women reviewing my work? - Then I might stand a better chance of getting into the top 10?

With all due respect, if you are only concerned with getting into the Top 10, then you will not get the best out of this site. The Chart placing is just icing on the cake. What it is about is improving your writing. Do you think you are consummate enough a writer already to just crash straight into the Top 10? In which case why are you bothering with the likes of us here? The scores don't matter nearly as much as the specific responses of the reviewers (readers) to your text. You can't ask men not to review your work. What you can do is use male comments to hone your future marketing of your book, who it's aimed at and why.
"A,B&E", "Not In My Name" and "52FF" (flash fiction anthology) all available on Amazon Kindle"How a psychopath makes sweet love. I can get you ringside. Royal box even."

hmmm
If people are marking you down because they don’t like your genre, then they aren’t playing the game correctly. It quite clearly states in the instructions that you are supposed to score in good faith and on the books own terms.
I don’t think you can do anything about getting only women to read your book (plus I think that would be a mistake anyway). But there is a ‘fans of this genre’ score somewhere which might give you a better picture of what your target audience thinks.
But mostly – stop worrying about the charts – unless you’re at number 1 they don’t matter.

Doesn't work like that on here. Men can sometimes see things that women are blind to. I wrote what I thought was more suited to women, but I've had some of my best and most constructive reviews from men who've really enjoyed my stories. My book reviews on Amazon by men are very favourable, too. You need that balance of m/f readers to get a true picture. As regards to your other query about chart positions, I'm not sure what the current top ten scores are, but you need around a 4.4 to 4.8 to be amongst the top five. I had a 4.8 on a number one novel last year, but I also got to number 2 with a 4.4 the year before. Hope that gives you an idea. But really, just forget the charts for now and use the reviews that are the most helpful to polish up your story to make it the best ever. Get the balance right in your settings and details without over egging it and you'll please all your readers, whatever their sex, and that's what it's all about! Good luck.

Hiya Locksmith,
I went in at 25 too, because despite the 4.5's most people were giving me, I had a whole set of two's and a two whole sets of threes !!! Regardless of the glowing reviews.
I've managed to delete the twos and one set of threes now, and I've gone up to 17, so there is hope! I might have to re-upload to get any further up though? Not sure.
Anyway, keep plugging away.
