Encouraged by complimentary reviews from many of my reviewers, I accepted YWO's offer to publish my novel Becoming Lola (based on the true story of the extraordinary life of the most notorious adventuress of the Victorian era) and it is now out on Amazon/Waterstone's Direct or to order through bookshops.

The problem of course is how, amongst so many titles, to stand out. So far I've taken the local option and approached the independent bookshop in the nearby town. The manager was hugely supportive and arranged a booksigning and publicity in local papers through his contacts. They also have a very good website and have posted the book on it.

I know it is tempting to try to get into the big stores but they tend to have centralised buying policies. If you start small and it works, it is a great boost to one's confidence.

Good luck to everyone else who is marketing their work.

Hattie, have you discovered what discount your local bookshop is enjoying? My local said that the discount on pod via Gardners was so miniscule as to be not worth calculating.
The owner said, nevertheless she would order copies of my novel as I was a local writer and she wanted to support the locals.
I was not prepared to see her make no profit and told her that, with my author discount, we could split the difference so that she gets about the same amount as my royalty.

She has paid me the cover price - no sale or return.
