Well, my little old story, SAFE, has had an extract included in an English text book published by Folens, a writer from Sweden has included it in an A-Z of recommended English writers, and then last night I get an email from a teacher in Canada telling me her school has bought a class set, and enquiring if she can purchase any teaching resources for it. I know plenty of other members have had similar results, with their books being used in schools in other countries, read by book clubs and included on college reading lists etc. I've no idea how it all happens, but it never ceases to amaze me, and if anyone's currently deliberating about whether to go do that road, they might well find all this interesting. Cheers, Kate

Kate, that is marvellous news - I'm so pleased for you! And I agree, the whole world of publishing is changing. Having been in the conventional version of that world, I can truthfully say I am happier now that I am in greater control. I have to work harder on things like marketing, and I'm poorer, but I am more satisfied. I set down some thoughts about this in another thread, and I'm convinced we need to see our relationship with readers in a new way. And I feel strongly that writers can help each other. Long live the (writers') revolution! Ann

I love being involved in the marketing and selling of my own book and look forward to promoting the next one very soon.

Brilliant Kate, well done. I do feel my book should be compulsory reading in every secondary school. It's got the binge drinking, the fighting, the er beast with two backs. Sort of early career advice really.
"A,B&E", "Not In My Name" and "52FF" (flash fiction anthology) all available on Amazon Kindle"How a psychopath makes sweet love. I can get you ringside. Royal box even."

Thank you all for your kind responses. I'm pursuing the traditional route with my second book at the moment, but as Ann says, developments like this do make you wonder - is that necessarily the best way? I'm different to Ann as she's already had books published by a mainstream publisher, and I haven't! I think perhaps that's my main motivation; to be acknowledged by professionals as being 'good enough'. But then when I get an email from a teacher who's reading my book to her class and she tells me she's never seen them so focussed on any other book before, I start to think who is it exactly that I'm seeking approval from? Anyway thanks again, Kate

Hi, it does make you wonder, doesn't it, when you've been into a school maybe, and had the kids hanging on your every word, and keen to buy the book themselves, why God gave agents and publishers the right to rubbish your work. What do they know that is better and more important than the people you have aimed your book at? Congrats Kate, well done. One in the eye for mainstream publishers and agents! May you have many more successes like that! And all the rest of us too!
