The BBC is making savage cuts in the short stories broadcast on Radio 4 - one of the few outlets left for short stories.

The Society of Authors is backing a campaign to persuade the BBC to retain short stories and has a meeting with the BBC nexr week. They need all the support they can get, so please sign the petition at the link below.

P.S.
You don't have to make a donation - it's purely optional.

Me too. I've also suggested they use more previously published stories and don't ask for exclusive rights so writers won't mind a lower payment. My guess is that it's the usually famous reader that makes it too expensive. Brilliant as they are, lesser known actors would be cheaper.

Thanks, Claire and Sue. The BBC doesn't demand exclusive rights forever. Without checking my contracts, I seem to remember it was just for 12 months. Also, you get paid again if they use it again (I did). Although they do use some top actors, that isn't always the case. I find the whole thing very surprising, as I'd have thought it would be one of the cheapest ways of filling air time.
