Dear All

As some of you will recall last year I won an Escalator Literature Award. As part of this scheme I was assigned a mentor to help me with my writing for the next year.

My mentor is Katharine McMahon and I’m thrilled to say that she has been chosen for the Richard & Judy 2008 Book Club.

If anyone is interested in tuning in, Katharine will be on tomorrow’s programme (Wedn).

The R&J effect has certainly worked its magic. Last week alone Katharine sold 10 000 copies of her book – more than her sales for the entire of 2007.

Can’t wait to see our first YWO R&J author.

Best wishes

Guy

Hi Guy

I shall try and check it out tomorrow.
But I was wondering if you could answer a question for me? I'm considering applying for a mentoring scheme run by the Arts Council and wondered how you rated such an experience?

Thanks

I know several other people on mentoring schemes and, I'm afraid to say, it depends entirely on a) who you get b) your individual chemistry.

My own experience has been very positive. Katharine has been nothing other than enthusiastic and helpful. As a published author she has lots of insight into the business and when I’ve given her writing to look at her response is less to do with whether she likes it or not (though luckily she had enjoyed all my work so far!) than thinking how a publisher will perceive it.

It’s also good to have someone there to bounce ideas off, as well as a friendly voice encouraging you on.

So I’d certainly pursue any mentoring opportunities you get (and that goes for everyone on the board).

There’s a very good book on the subject on writing and mentoring. Unfortunately, I’m in the process of moving offices at the moment so it’s all boxed up – but when I’m unpacked I’ll mail you details.

In the meantime if there’s anything else you’d like to know feel free to drop me a line.

Thanks Guy

Definitely something else to think about. I'm waiting on the outcome of a couple of things before I decide what to do next.

Hope your move goes all right - always fun.

Just managed to catch the +1 show of Richard and Judy. They, their guests, and the Melton Mowbray bookclub certainly seemed to love the book and Katharine's enthusiasm was infectious.
Hope the extra publicity helps her sales.

And she looked so sweet in her hat!

I'm sure her sales will be rosy (geddit?) from now on.
