Though I'm new to YWO, I've been writing long enough than I can remember. Though to quote Paul Abbot, creator of Shameless - 'writing is rewriting'.

I have several chapters of my novel uploaded here and has been reviewed (I won't mention this person's name, but if you're reading this, many thanks) and suggests a re-read as there are faults among other things.

I'm not putting the reviwer down because of this; after all, it is an opinon, though I treasure what he/she said, and for him I think a re-write of the whole novel is required.

Or am I being harsh on myself?

Thanks for reading

Hey James. I had a quick read of your stuff and the reviewer is right about the spelling mistakes and missed words so you should perhaps have a read through and make the corrections or else it will keep coming up.

As for his other comments regarding dialogue etc that's his opinion but may not be that of other people. It's your first review so wait to get a few more before you decide what changes to make. Considering a re-write on the suggestion of one reader is a bit premature.

Good luck

It's always best to wait for a handful of reviews. Only if the same things are pointed out by the majority would I consider changing them. One person's opinion is not enough basis for you to consider a re-write. Have patience, see what advice other's have to offer.

Best of luck and welcome to the site.

Many of us in a peer review site are amateurs in the writing world. Speaking for myself only, I'm constantly learning and changing the way I feel about how something is written. One has to be careful with making changes, because you could rewrite the whole novel, put it back up, and in that time you've been so busy working on my past suggestions, I've decided I was wrong with my first view and now want you to put it all back the way it was. If you have any hair left by the time this is all over, it will be a miracle. The advise given somewhere on this site to gather up a good bunch of reviews before making any decisions about rewriting is a sound one. I pull them all up from this site as well as another site I belong to, make notes on where it seems most people are concerned, and then, and only then, make my decision about making major changes. Little editing nits I'll correct immediately.

Go through and sort out the spelling mistakes and missed words. It takes practice to learn to see them, but it's a viatl skill. Meanwhile, see what other people say. You've only got to do the first few thousand words before you can put up a revised version, after all!

I am new to this site and have posted my 1st novel's opening chapters.

I now have a star rating after 4 reviews. I can see that I need to learn a lot and that rewrites will have to be done. Please can you look at my reviews and see if the comments are fair or not? I've just received a particularly harsh review and I feel rather sensitive about it!

Thanks
Temperance

Hey Natasha. Don't worry if you've noticed my comments further down the MB, I haven't come to be grumpy. Lol

Your latest review isn't the most helpful in the world as it points out perceived failings without giving examples or suggestion on how to improve the piece. I haven't read your work but looking over the previous reviews which are helpful and constructive I'd say you'd be best to concentrate on what they are trying to tell you, especially as there are some common threads to them. Also you only have four reviews at the moment so I would continue to garner more opinions and then decide on a way forward.

I've only looked at the reviews, but the comments in the second one about infodumps and viewpoints are important, and specific. You could have a look at those while you're thinking about the rest.

Thanks Robert and Tempy for your advice.
I was also wondering how many more reviews I need to get before I consider rewriting my novel.

Also when I do rewrite it does it need to be posted as a new novel separately? Otherwise if I edited what is already there and left the current reviews people would wonder what was going on? I am also considering changing the title as it obviously doesnt fit correctly with the novel.
Thanks
