I was recommended to read this book and loved it - if this was in print I'd buy it straight away. If you like the original Jilly Cooper books (not the bonkbuster ones but her earlier ones) you would love this. I haven't finished editing my own short story to go on the site so am building up some credits first but I wish I was able to review this book. Because I don't think my voluntary review helps the author and this deserves to be in the top ten.

Does my voluntary review help the author?

Hi jane,
Can you explain how you can recommend a book four days before it was posted on YWO?

Well, it's either magic, or else it's because this lady is psychic, or else it's because the book has been on the website for several weeks, had a considerable number of very enthusiastic reviews, which makes it quite likely that someone recommended it; then it was taken off the site, edited, and put back on again. You choose. Occam's Razor and all that.

As you wrote the piece, I'm guessing it's the latter.
Just struck as strange that the recommendation appeared only days before it was re-posted without mention of it being a revision of an earlier piece.

I didn't know that one had to point out that it was a revision when putting it back on the site. I was stuck in the netherworld of being at about number 14 in the charts and the advice in that case which is given on the forum here is to take the work off and upload it again. I had already had more than 20 reviews when I took it off. All I did was change a few very minor points so it's hardly any different to what it was before.

I am very, very flattered that someone liked it enough to recommend it to someone else to read and that this lady took the trouble to give me a free will review - very sad that when I took the book off site it meant all the really nice comments were lost along with the (one or two) pissy ones.

I'm sure there is no such rule - it's just that I'm used to people flagging up a revision.
Hence being flummoxed by the dates.

You can have more than one version up at a time. Lots of people have/do.

Does it make a difference putting it up as a 'new' story? I've always been editing the original so a revised version wouldn't look any different to what's up now.

One argument is that it gives previous reviewers - shd they get the excerpt again or choose to freewill - the opportunity to see and comment on whether they think the new version is better.
And that's one of the reasons why I think it's good to flag up 'revised'.
Adding 'revised' also prevents people asking dumb questions like I did.
