In the course of a long life, the person who has irritated me most (and that's saying something) was the Fitness Instructor on my Young Officer Training Course. As we wretched candidates for the Battle Fitness Test used to huddle together on the drill square at 5am every day, he would invariably bellow: "Gentlemen and Laydeez, I do not want to see 99% effort. I do not want to see 100% effort. What do I want to see?" And we would all dutifully chorus "One Hundred and ONE percent effort, Corporal!" whilst muttering under our breaths "Stupid little man. You can't have more than 100%."

But apparently we were wrong: in YWO-Land you can. The YWO scoring range is 1 to 5, but this morning I find that my latest story has a Genre Fan Rating of 5.1. It isn't even as if every Genre Fan gave me a perfect 8 x 5 - there are some fours in there. And seven of the little stars show 4 and a half. Have we finally driven Ted insane? How can you get 5.1 when no one can award you more than 5?

I shall now go and lie down for half an hour in a darkened room to get over the shock. When I come back, I'm really, really hoping that someone like Rod, or Andrew, or indeed anyone who can do sums, will have been able to explain this bizarre mathematical phenomenon.

I'd put it down to the programmers at Zarr (possibly a one-man band?) working on changes to the site. Oddly, they seem to be deploying code on a live site (and quite clearly untested code at that).

Expect many crashes, strange happenings and parts of the site giving errors for days to come.
Now and then I write:

Athene, when I put my new version of Steps up in July, my fan rating genre was an amazing 6.3. I was gobsmacked as the overall rating was 4.8 after 4 reviews. I queried it with my editor who didn't know why that had happened. Now it's down to 4.3 so was that a gremlin in the works long before the changes started taking place?

Better than 1.5, Athene. I'd print that 5.1 out and frame it. Could be worth money some day. Or will someone get a 10, next? Or even a minus score? At least it wasn't your OR.

A review is received and the piece's OR goes to -4.8. That'd set the Thank You forum alight!

You can't print it with the mega scores as it will only show when you "hover"! It just shows the usual 5 red stars, which is still very nice of course!

That's helpful to know, Pam. Thanks.

:omg: 6.3! :omg:
5.1 is strange enough, but that is just SO weird. In my logical, simple brain, I have always assumed that to get a score of 5, you woud need everyone to award you nothing but 5s. But here's me with better than five, in spite of getting some fours, and there's you way up in the stratosphere making my 5.1 looking like nothing special! It's beyond me; but I guess that's is why we're writers not mathematicians.

I first noticed 'strange genre scores' a year ago when I had a single 'genre reviewer' for a story -- someone who awarded 9 fives and 1 four, yet the genre score was only 4. I emailed Ted at the time in case there was a code problem.

I have a short story now with a 5.1 genre score, as well.

I wonder if it is something to do with the mysterious category weightings used by YWO, and if their influence is 'breaking through' in the code used for the genre rating.
