How bizarre that a novella stands to win $1000, yet a short story $1250
"A,B&E", "Not In My Name" and "52FF" (flash fiction anthology) all available on Amazon Kindle

Did I read the deadline correctly? I think we missed it!

I think they are having issues with their website. I clicked on the current info for them - Contest closing dates -

as you can see, all of their closing dates are in 2010.

I sent an e-mail to them asking them to clarify but I'm pretty sure the dates listed in the chart given above are correct.

Also, check out to the right of their page and get your sample copy of the magazine. It is put together very well and whomever gets published will be quite happy, at least in my opinion.

Oh, and if you decide to enter, make sure you follow the guidelines:

CONTEST GUIDELINES

General Rules of Entry for Each Contest

1. All contests are void where prohibited by law.

2. All contests are open to public over the age of 18 except in the Carpe Verbum Young Writer's Award, wherein all entries must be written by children or young adults under the age of 18 years at the deadline date. We are open to international submissions. All rules apply.

3. All work must be original, and by submitting the pieces, author gives rights to the Carpe Articulum Literary Review to print the piece in the magazine up to 3 times. All rights revert back to the author or artist.

4. Multiple entries are accepted in multiple categories up to, but not to exceed, 5 total entries per contest cycle.

5. Previously printed work is acceptable as long as circulation did not exceed 2,000 copies of magazine, newspaper or book or other media genre.

6. Two cover sheets must be included: one with author's contact information (including name, address, telephone number, e-mail, entry title, and contest name). The second must contain the contest name and working TITLE of the piece ONLY. Absolutely no author name may be included on the work itself (unless a painting) or the piece(s) will be disqualified.

7. No manuscripts will be returned. SASE is suggested with each entry.

8. Electronic entries are acceptable and encouraged, as long as all the guidelines are observed, and entry fee accompanies its submission, ear-marked for the work's title and author. Send electronic entries via a .doc file through the website or to the e-mail address:
editor-in-chief@carpearticulum.com This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

9. If no suitable winner can be found by contests' end, the judges may invoke the right to extend the contest date slightly in order to find appropriate work material. However, all contests will be awarded the funds allocated to them.

10. All reader's fees are non-refundable, and work is non-returnable. Please see to it that you are NOT sending us your only copy.

11. All reader fees can be paid online via this website, OR by check or money order payable to: CARPE ARTICULUM LITERARY REVIEW

Entries can be sent via mail to:
The Carpe Articulum Literary Review
The Carpe Verbum Contest WS/ (write short fiction, novella, etc. here)
8630 SW Scholls Ferry Rd. Suite 177
Portland, Oregon 97008

12. All Submissions MUST be postmarked by the deadline. We get a lot of work in, and in order to give it the proper attention, appropriate time allowances must be made. If for any reason you feel you may have omitted an important piece of information or may have inadvertently made an error in putting your package together, feel free to contact us and we will do our best to straighten out the issue. We sincerely want all authors to get their due recognition. If deadline is missed, the piece will not be disqualified. It will roll over to the next contest cycle.

I received an e-mail from Carpe and the dates listed on the website below are correct:

Submission Dates

I believe there are two additional dates for shorts and poems with the other being March 30. I am waiting for clarification on that as well.

I got an e-mail for the competition 'submit by' dates.

All of them are mentioned prevoiusly except that short story competitions are held twice a year, not once, and submissions for the short story contest must be received by March 30, and Sept. 30, 2010.

How well known are they? Or is this an internet 'start up' to get writers to pay for competitions?

They've been around for about seven years and they produce one of the most beautiful litarary magazines I've ever seen. They sell them at Barnes and Nobel here in the U.S.

You can go to the link below and then scroll down on the right side until you get to the free sample issue. Take a look. They are revamping their website so some of the info may appear with old dates but I did confirm the entry dates with the editor.
