If someone wants to use this message board, which can get a bit 'tasty' at times, is it not fair that they should have at least some work posted.

It seems bizarre, to me anyway, that an individual can join YWO, and then use the Message Boards without any work of their own posted.

I feel, somehow, that when a writer puts work up for review on this site it is a statement, 'This is who I am, what I do, how I feel. And, by making that statement we, most of us anyway, are looking for help from other people in the same position. But we are also making ourselves vulnerable, are we not. And, as most of us know, harsh reviews hurt.

But we all accept that.

And so, in terms of the MB's we all start from the same point of equal vulnerability.

But NOT to have any work posted, and still use this facility seems a bit like visiting a nudist camp, but being unprepared to take your clothes off. That is, you know the conditions, now stick to them.

So, I argue, 'No Work Posted, No Message Board facility'.

I did make a suggestion to Ted some time ago that this might solve a few problems. There had been a spate of nasty free wills from a more or less anonymous source, not to mention arguments on the message boards. As far as I know, Ted has added it to his list of Things To Do.

I had a pointless and nasty FW from someone who has no work posted. He has also used the MB from time to time. His review, which was very short, merely said he didn't like a first-person narrator. I think he gave me a three. I don't know how he found me, as I don't think I'd been on the MB around then. The only justification for the attack that I can see is that he claimed to be writing something set in the first century, as The Testament of Mariam is, so perhaps saw me as a 'rival'. Still, how did he find it? He also claimed to be new to YWO, whereas he actually joined at the beginning of 2009.

Strange, strange.

I don't know if this is completely fair though - new members might be finding their feet, testing the waters by trying to join in on the message boards before posting their work up. (Too many cliches, sorry! Do I get marked down for that?)

Plus older members might have withdrawn work to revise it before putting it back up again. Overall, I think the forum should be open to all members, whatever stage they're at.

That sound reasonable, but sometimes, when one checks back, the writer has no work, no identity and no email address, and it thus able to say exactly what he or she damn well pleases.

Now, I have said some rude things on the MB from times to time, and had rude replies, BUT I am there as a writer, and so were the others. And if people choose to pick me up on some point or another, fair enough, as long as I know who they are.

Now, to 'hide' like is pretty low.

And if a 'newbie' wants to look at the message board fine, if they want read work posted and the subsequent reviews fine, but if they want to post comments in complete anonymity, then it's not fine.

Well I don't think so anyway. A bit like waiting in the shadows, emerging to strike a blow, then hiding again.

So you don't want agents and publishers trawling YWO then Dai?

Also that most precious commodity, a reader, without a book of their own to plug.
"A,B&E", "Not In My Name" and "52FF" (flash fiction anthology) all available on Amazon Kindle

Anyone can read a sample. You don't have to be a member for that, just to leave a comment.

Hope Ted adds it to his list of Things To Do Soon. Ted won't have any difficulty distinguishing between newbies who aren't ready to post work yet, old hands who have posted in the past but haven't anything up at the moment - and those who have created a User ID simply to make mischief with impunity.

I agree. Old names without work up-loaded will be familiar to all anyway, but there's an element of mischief-makers who seem to take delight in giving crappy free-wills. Why bother if you've nothing constructive to say about the work? Members will remove the reviews. Better employing your time writing something and uploading it for us all to see.

Personally it doesn't bother me if someone has work posted or not - if they have a valid point to make on the forum and are a member, fair enough. However, I can understand if others disagree with that.

I think the idea of anonymity vs knowing who people are is trickier, because how do we really know? I'm sure there are several 'sock puppets' on this site who have double or triple identities and they're not necessarily new members or members who haven't put work up. All part and parcel of this strange virtual world we live in, I guess
