Am I allowed to recommend my own short stories?
Yours Aye.

Historical and science fiction within the same short story ... If you pull that off without looking like what my esteemed colleagues refer to above, that will indeed have much to recommend it. I'm not going to be the one to judge though. I feel out of my depth in both genres.

Hello Brymag - it has been done before, but what with this being a UK based site and also the majority (I think) of its members being Brits, that sort of thing tends not to happen. There certainly isn't a rule against it though.

Oooo - I like Brit Lit - I shall steal it immediately.
There has been a resurgance of interest in SPACE OPERA. Which is nice, especially as it is being spear-headed by British writers.
However, I do not think I can get away with apply the word "Lit" to Science Fiction - all the literary zealots will be after me with stout sticks.

Terry Pratchett got accused of literature and won a literary prize too, even if they didn't have a clue who he was. It was the biggest turn-out for a prize giving ever - so go for it.

Nah yer alright, my stout stick is at the repair shop. What is space opera when it's at home (or away in another universe) ?

Big and bombastic tales - huge fleets, epic themes and sweeping issues - the universe is the horizon. Boy scout stuff, (or was that just the era they mostly were written in?) The style has lain low, with a couple of exceptions, since EE 'Doc' Smith wrote loads of them between the 40s and 60s - the Lensman series was probably the most epic. You did a FWR on my current story - that one falls into the same category.
