Mighty indeed. John, that was not just the best story I’ve read on this site, but the best short story I’ve read in a long time. I literally had tears in my eyes towards the end and I’ve now a raging thirst on me for a pint of Guinness.
It’s so near perfect that I hesitate to suggest one or two very minor changes, but, that’s what we’re here for isn’t it?
The first is in the opening paragraph - a fine opening indeed. It’s that sentence: “A child cannot comprehend the depth of tragedy in such a tale, and nor could I.” this almost suggests that the narrator wasn’t a child, though we know she was. How about: “No child could comprehend the depth of tragedy in such a tale, and I was no different.” or something like that?
I loved the way the tale unfolded, with tales within tales, sparse description, fine dialogue, all brilliant ...

Synopsis
Molly spends her summer holidays with her mother's family in Connemara. There is to be a great story-telling contest, but how can her Uncle Tommy win it if he won't even enter?
