I'm at No.5 with a novel, and there are three novels above me. Always supposing things stay this way until 31st May, then I think I go into the Best Sellers, and I get a mini-crit, but not a full-length crit? Is that right?

And if I drop to anywhere between No 6 and No 11 on or before 31st May, then I don't get into the Best Sellers, but I do still get the mini-crit? Is that right?

Help!

Now you're asking! I don't think you go into the Best Sellers as that would take you out of the charts for the chance of getting a 1-3 novel placing, if you see what I mean. Maybe you get a mini-crit to be going on with and maintain a chart position, which, if nothing else is lying in wait, you'll go into the top 3. It used to be 5 but now it's 3. (novels that is, not counting any shorts that are hovering) But then again, I may be completely wrong and I don't sound as though I'm making any sense, but it is early, for me anyway.

I can see I was right to be baffled. Don't the Top Five each month automatically go into the Best Sellers? But then, as you say, if there were four or five novels in the Top Five, one or two of them would miss out on any chance of ever getting a full-length crit. Which they might get the following month if they stayed out of the Best Sellers.

That's the gist of it, I think. Maybe someone else will know for sure.

You have to be in the top 3 novels to get a pro crit, but if you're at position 4 or 5, you go into the Best Sellers with a mini-crit. Nothing to stop you posting a revised version at some point.

Thanks, Pam, Sue.
On reflection, that sounds good to me for this particular piece. I've called it a novel but it's really a chronological series of short stories. And I don't want to appear to be denigrating my own genre, but I do rather feel that a full-length pro crit would be a bit wasted on a simple, light-hearted piece for (mainly) small children. I really don't think I need an in-depth study of the character of Professor Quatermouse! (although it might be fun to see a Random House reviewer struggle to produce one).
So I won't put on any more credits until after 31st May, because it will go into the Best Sellers with a mini-crit even if it doesn't stay in the Top Five, and I think the chances of it being nudged out of the Top Ten at this stage of the month are pretty low.

Just a thought, if you or Sue can answer me this, Ros. Monday, Monday is due to be pensioned off into the Best Sellers - I think. It's been in the top-ten three consecutive months except for the last couple of weeks. Do I need to stick a credit on it before the end of this month? I haven't bothered to put one on as I've had a good number of very useful reviews and it's served it's time, as I said, so is a credit necessary now? Seems a bit of a waste, but still, if needs must.

If it's qualified for the BSs, it will go in regardless. If you want to see it in the charts on 1st June and you haven't added a credit for 30 days, you'll have to add one.

Thanks, Sue. Am I right in thinking it qualifies? It had two full months t t-ing barring one day and then two and a half weeks of this month top-tenning.
