Hello all, just registered and am working on first novel. I'm not in a position to post anything yet as I am still plotting, but is it possible to build up reviewing credits by reviewing other's work before I post mine, or do I have to upload something first?

Nice to be here!

There was some discussion on the Message Boards recently about whether this is possible. Best way to find out is to have a look at your "My Page," and see if there is an invitation to "Request New Reading Assignment." It'll be up near the top of the page. If it isn't, you can't!
But welcome anyway - hope you find the site useful.

Hi both, I'm also new and seem to have accidentally circumvented this rule:

Like Darren I couldn't see the button to request a story to review so assumed I had to upload first. Unfortunately I recently decided on some major restructuring of my novel which resulted in a huge plot change and the new version is only at the hundreds of words rather than thousands, a fact that was very obvious when I went to write the synopsis and found the new one didn't relate in any way to the original 10000 word draft. So I changed my mind and didn't upload, preferring to wait until i get the new novel more advanced. However, I did get the request assignment button - which I clicked - and hey presto I have an assignment!

Not sure if this is "legal" or fair, perhaps someone can advise?

Welcome to you both! I've been on here for about six weeks already and am still learning the ropes. But I've found it very useful. Have fun!

Welcome both of you.

It does seem a bit odd that you should be able to request an assignment if you haven't uploaded anything yet, lemonfix. However, we do get the occasional hiccup.

If you want to do some assignment reviews and build up a few credits in your bank, may I suggest that you upload one or two short stories, if you have written any. You don't have to keep attaching credits to them if you don't wish to, though one occasionally would do no harm. The reviews that you receive for them may help with your other writing.

Make sure that you specify at the beginning that they are short stories. Some reviewers don 't bother to check genre listings.

Thanks for the welcome guys, and hello also to darrenwhitehouse and athene.

MLT - thanks for the advice, unfortunately I don't write short stories so can't post any. I did think about uploading the original draft - but this would be only to calm my own guilty conscience. I've already ditched it so asking for review would be wasting people's time, not something I'd appreciate.

I looked up the FAQs and discovered that if I remove the assignment it will automatically be reassigned elesewhere. In the meantime I think I'll content myself with exploring the site properly - and of course working hard to get the new novel to a decent state and length for review!

Thanks all - really helpful. I do have a short story actually, so I'll take a look at it and get it posted. Whatever feedback would be great, but at least it will enable to get reviewing others.

Lemonfix, I would suggest that you add some text to your bio, so that members can understand your position in case they haven't read this thread.
Cheers

Rather like that. I have a short story with much the same title: 'He sings because he is.'
