James Murdoch could face criminal charges on both sides of the AtlanticAs phone hacking scandal leaves News Corp open to prosecution, James Murdoch looks less likely to inherit empire Source Guardian James Murdoch and News Corp could face corporate legal battles on both sides of the Atlantic that involve criminal charges, fines and forfeiture of assets as the escalating phone-hacking scandal risks damaging his chances of taking control of Rupert Murdoch's US-based media empire. As deputy chief operating officer of News Corp – the US-listed company that is the ultimate owner of News International (NI), which in turn owns the News of the World, the Times, the Sunday Times and the Sun – the younger Murdoch has admitted he misled parliament over phone hacking, although he has stated he did not have the complete picture at the time. There have also been reports that employees routinely made payments to police officers, believed to total more than £100,000, in return for information. View complete article

This is a great story, isn't it? Is this the end of the Murdochs? Thank god if it is.

These people tend to survive like cockroaches in a nuclear war Why single them out though? We get the Press we deserve. if people didn't want to read about celebrities, there wouldn't be such a culture of prying and net twitching among the Press reporters that leads to phone hacking.

Can't believe The NOTW is the bestselling newspaper. I find it depressing to think there are that many people choosing to read salacious gossip instead of news.

We get the Press we deserve.
This is an oft repeated fallacy. Along the same lines as : 'we get the fiction we deserve', and 'we get the TV we deserve'.
We get the shit we are SOLD, not the shit we deserve.
And it is disingenuous anyway - what you mean is YOU get the Press YOU deserve (in a patroninising 'I don't fall for that shit' tone).
Such an argument holds no water when discussing the Press. It is lazy. You should be ashamed of yourself.

Don't believe the ones from The Guardian or The Spectator or Mail are any better. This Johann Hari who is being accused of penning articles lifted directly from others, well one middlebrow/highbrow hack seized it as an opportunity for payback for a critical review Hari gave him of a book he'd written. I have never read daily papers in my life and see no reason to do so. Ironic that I've ended up servicing the industry though...

I don't know whose media office you work at, but you are servicing the needs of that orgaization rather than the press. ie it's useful to that organization to make use of the press & you are the conduit. Any chance of the Murdochs being transported to Botany bay?. And not being allowed out.

Such an argument holds no water when discussing the Press. It is lazy. You should be ashamed of yourself. Stated as bald fact, would you care to back it up with a smidgen of argument? There's is only 1 lazy advocate here and that's someone who can't be ars*d to offer anything. But hey, I'll bite cos I'm an obedient little puppy. If we're being sold it then we are allowing it to be sold to us at best, or gleefully lapping it up at worst. es it me be a self-reinforcing vicious circle, of the media hammering in the message that this is what we really want to read & know about, but then we fail to exercise any critical faculties in challenging this. We opt to be blindsided, not the media is so fiendishly skillful that we have no idea they are even doing it to us. There, I used the royal we, satisfied? Like I said, I have never taken a daily paper, cos I didn't want my news from someone with an agenda, be it Right, Liberal, soft Left or The Morning Star. Yeah I probably get suckered in whatever way I take my news and current affairs, since it is all still produced according to market agendas if nothing else. Ashamed? Only of the British Press, which we deserve because we demand nothing better. Maybe this will be a watershed and shake the industry up in some way, but probably not and everyone will return to the same as before, even if under new names. Like Italian politics really, which only served to deliver up Berlusconi for decades of rule.

The same old journos get sacked and turn up at some rival newspaper, even if its politics are diametrically opposed the the Paper they just left. The Press reports the truth to the best of its ability, but sometimes that ability just isn't good enough. Give me the fiction-making authors any day. And yes WP will probably jump down my throat as that being some sort of class snobbishness, that I prefer to read novels than the columns of the tabloids, but hey ho that's my cross to bear. I am full of self-loathing for my day job. I'd rather be a full-time writing, but that doesn't seem like it's going to happen any time soon. Murdoch is a US citizen now, so there's no way he'll be transported back to Botany Bay.

I like the Telegraph crossword but don't like their politics.
It is true that this kind of celebrity gossip is shoved down our throats though, isn't it? Even if you never read magazines, you can't stand in a queue at Boots without being confronted by pictures of grinning celebs next to lurid headlines.Every time you check your email on yahoo, some scandalous story about someone I've never heard of pops up.
As for television - don't get me started! There's so little choice, despite the number of channels, that I hardly watch any more. People who have no choice, like my mum, who can't get about or read any more, end up watching crap because that's all there is.
Murdoch controls so much, probably even more than we fear. I just hope this scandal lessens that power, although I doubt it will.
Gosh! I must be getting old - and crotchety.Grrrrr!!!
