Now, I know the title of the currently uploaded chapters from my novel The Ordinary Man doesn’t exactly get a potential reviewer drooling with anticipation, (my bad) and reviews appear to be slow coming in, (possibly a ‘time of year thing’) but drawing a comparison to 2008 it appears something ain’t right. At that time the 10,000 word limit applied and yet reviews came in on a regular basis, generally for all uploads. I’m beginning to smell formaldehyde. I sincerely hope I'm mistaken. Or is it maybe a shift in direction from a peer review site that helps to improve our work with constructive comment? Has the pro-crit carrot and self pub entity become the be and end all? What’s happening folks?
Hey saucy, that's the best offer I've had all night.

I can only speak for myself, but I put up stories to get feedback, positive and negative and of course give out my own thoughts on other work, but then I have to take a break away from reviewing for a while, sometimes only a couple weeks, but sometimes for months. I need this so I can come back with a fresh outlook. I can't imagine not using this site and others like it for what it is meant to be used for, improving my work enough to get publishers to take a look. Usually after a break I can read and critique three or four stories a week. When I start slowing down or it becomes a chore rather than fun, it's time for another break. I think this happens to most of us and is probably why critique numbers run in streaks.

John,

Jazz up the title and the synopsis and see what happens. The novel is mint, that's for sure. Just experiment.

I'd be interested to see the outcome.

there is nothing to say that you can't change it back when you are rich and famous.

Yo Keel

These things come around and around. There was a debate on the frequency of reviews back in 2006 so, being a sad bastard, I did an analysis and concluded that the interval between posting a credit / receiving a review and receiving the next review was 5.2 days with a spread of 6 hours to 15 days. I have recently posted stuff and waited for 10 days, thinking 'what about the good old days' when review came faster then got three reviews in five days. I don't think much has changed.

Posting your own reviews quickly really does work too.

So the money spent on a rejigging of YWO's site in order to speed up reviews has been wasted?
"A,B&E", "Not In My Name" and "52FF" (flash fiction anthology) all available on Amazon Kindle

You may say so. I couldn't possibly comment

Thanks Crossmouse. I've just downloaded my newest (Revised) version yesterday. You were correct about those issues. I've now fixed my story and I think it runs a lot smoother because of this. I have taken Christopher's point of view out of the intro chapters. I've also incorporated more New Zealand settings, and have totally revamped the start of Chapter 1, which makes it darker and run smoother (No police). Katie is now called Natasha. There is also a totally new scene at the end where Catherine visits the nun (previously in the second part of the story, but with the Christopher scene gone can now fit into the 7,000 word limit.)

Kind Regards, Marita.

It’s now coming up to one calendar month since I uploaded the opening chapters of my completed novel. I’ve taken advice and changed the title to my second choice, Death has no Face, and have spiced up the blurb and mentioned it’s the first of a trilogy, Guardians and Overlords. I haven’t posted the synopsis simply because one A4 sheet doesn’t upload fully; I spent countless hours preparing the synopsis and I see little point in butchering it about into a half baked offering to fit a word count.
28 days and I’ve received one assignment review. I have plenty of credits backed up. I’ve done my bit. I’ve just about worked this novel to death; it’s been out and about and I’ve had some interest. I’m working up to a final pitch before I leave it and concentrate on other work. A few reviews will be most gratefully received. I’m not seeking the charts folks, just some honest feedback before I pull the story for good.
And, if you’re wondering, I have kept every review received on all my work, so just because it isn’t uploaded anymore doesn’t mean your review has been forgotten. Far from it, they are highly valued and I consult them on a regular basis.
I’m even changing my avatar to a smiley face in anticipation. John.
Hey saucy, that's the best offer I've had all night.

It's a mystery to me, John - the title's good, the brief synopsis is excellent, and the first page had me wanting to read on. Usually when people aren't getting reviews the reason's pretty obvious when you take a look, but not with this story. I'll do you a freewill, if you like. I don't often do them, but the sound of that is really getting to me.
