"Nothing is original. Steal from anywhere that resonates with inspiration or fuels your imagination. Devour old films, new films, music, books, paintings, photographs, poems, dreams, random conversations, architecture, bridges, street signs, trees, clouds, bodies of water, light and shadows. Select only things to steal from that speak directly to your soul. If you do this, your work (and theft) will be authentic.

Authenticity is invaluable; originality is non-existent. And don’t bother concealing your thievery - celebrate it if you feel like it. In any case, always remember what Jean-Luc Godard said: “It’s not where you take things from - it’s where you take them to."

all things have been said. All possible metaphors written. All associations of ideas put together. All combinations of words brought together (probably)

Bollocks (can I say that?)
There is originallity everywhere.
Thoughts may be triggered by existing stimulus, but you only have to change the time frame to make them original.

....just make sure you don't steal actual words - otherwise you will get done for plagiarism!

Really? Then we merely continue to churn out 20th century novels which themselves are little updated from the novels of the 19th century.

The Modernists such as Joyce, Woolf, Faulkner and the like at least tried to move the form on.

You can say it, but something original might make your point better.

Moving the time frame, that's why you get zombies in Wuthering Heights mash ups. Saints preserve us

You're talking about novels. Writing was not mentioned at all. This is a writing forum, novels are it's mainstay, but the topic was originality and the proposal was that nothing is original.
I think that is wrong; moreover that is sad, jaded, and unjustly cynical. Perhaps you are pre-programmed, perhaps you just regurgitate and all you read is a reflection of what has come before, but this evening I cooked a meal that has never been cooked before, thought thoughts that were original and will dream dreams that are as individual as my finger prints.
