I’ve come to the conclusion that these random reading assignments we all receive are not random at all. It seems impossible that YWO has some supernatural being who spends its entire time analysing every forum thread of each member and logic suggests it’s simply coincidence, but sometimes it’s uncanny!
I’m one of the few who NEVER removes an assignment, so I suppose I deserve all I get. But listen to this:

I wrote a novel about garden birds = lots of children/bird/animal stories.

I got some nice thank yous for women’s fiction titles I’d reviewed = more chick-lit than you can shake a stick at

I discussed tense problems and complex timelines on a thread = hey presto! A piece with tense issues and complex timelines

There are scores of other examples I could mention.

But if you’re reading this, assignment fairy, please don’t be offended or stop sending what your sending (I won’t mention a genre in case you send me it). I am enjoying the free education you’re giving me and applying it to my own humble scribblings.
Yours in boundless gratitude

I'm the biggest skeptic you could hope to avoid, but that hasn't stopped me thinking the same thing re fairies and so on.

As soon as I remove someone's assignment I get their other one.

As soon as I decide to avoid high fantasy, I get three in a row.

As soon as I mention publicly that I'm not doing any top tenners, I get three in a row.

Now I'm imagining Ted as the other, invisible member of the IT Crowd, locked in a basement with a goth ghost (actually, he IS the goth ghost), getting his kicks out of playing tricks (because he MUST have developed a hatred for wannabe authors - how could you not?).

Is the Aus/NZ TV schedules entirely taken up with UK old runs?

Not entirely. It depends which channels you watch. There is a minimum quota of local content which is a requirement for local broadcasters, but there's only so much Neighbours/Home and Away/Shortland Street I can take. As an official Young Fogey, I've always listened to government funded radio stations and watched ABC and SBS. I can't stand commercial channels because of the ads. Thank fuck for digital recorders where you can skip ads with a few clicks of the button!!

The IT Crowd is a gem. At least, the first season was. Most critics thought the second season was better but in this household we thought it went downhill a bit.

Anyone who works in a library can tell you there's a weird serendipitous thing that happens around books. Someone recommends an obscure author, and within hours that author's book falls into your hands.

There are hundreds of cds crammed on the shelves in the Jazz section, yet the very first one you touch is the one you were looking for.

You get an off-the-wall hunch about where a book might be mis-shelved, and you find it. (This one impresses the hell out of patrons.)

When I worked at the circulation desk, I had a disturbing streak that lasted for months. Several times a week, I found myself holding an item related to the Donner Party. It was freaky.

I'm guessing you've read Blink, by Malcolm Gladwell?

Absolutely true, and you find that everyone else has been using it for years. I remember it happening with 'louche'.
