yep, the TT rules say:

6) Novel chapters must be between 5,000 to 7,000 words to qualify for the book charts, and short stories must be between 2,000 to 5,000 words. Members can upload chapters under these word length requirements to get feedback, but chapters under the specified requirements will not be eligible for the Top Ten.

Back to my roots.

Thanks Pam.

hmm - that's quite interesting tho, because if there is no lower limit, or the limit doesn't kick in - theoretically someone could load up a short story, (say abt 3,000 words) and call it a novel opening. Then game the system and get a pro crit.

There are loads of other reasons that would not be a good idea, but it seems at least technically possible.

Yes, that's what I thought! But does that actually happen, as they definitely do get into the top 20.

Well no, they couldn't do that. The novel opening has to be between 5,000 and 7,000 words. Although, having said that, they could upload it twice in the same upload. Would they be bothered though?

I think Mona's #11 is an example, less than 5000 words, not classed as a short story although the other version a bit lower down is.

Here I am sticking my newbie credentials out from under the bushel again - but I am confused by the new charts. How come we lost 5 or 6 books from the top ten but the number 11 and 12 (and possibly lots of others but I can only remember what was a 11 & 12) didn't move up? How is it that some of the new Top Ten seem to have 'leapfrogged'. XX

Well, Ruth, here is how they DON'T work.

Fed up with editing my own work, reviewing that of others etc. I thought I would work it all out.

I have two books on YWO, 'The 16th Song' and 'Sha'Di' and the Eagle' One adult, the other for 11-15 year age group.

So,I thought, let us analyse the results, not in relation to others but just 'by themselves', for after all other ratings, particularly in relation to the 'Top Ten' are affected by their relationship to others, and those I cannot judge.

I made up a spread sheet and entered my ratings, thus:

The 16th Song

Characters 0 0 0 9 9
Story 0 0 6 7 5
Pace 0 2 6 4 6
Language 0 0 5 8 5
Narrative 0 0 5 8 5
Dialogue 0 1 2 7 8
Settings 0 0 2 10 6
Themes 0 0 4 9 5

Total 0 3 30 62 49 720

6 90 248 245 589 81.805%

As a % of % Stars 4.090278
Actual 3.9

Sha'Di and the Eagle

Characters 0 0 0 4 5
Story 0 0 2 4 5
Pace 0 0 2 4 3
Language 0 0 2 4 3
Narrative 0 0 1 2 6
Dialogue 0 0 3 4 2
Settings 0 0 0 6 3
Themes 0 0 0 6 5

Total 0 0 10 34 32 360 Max poss

0 30 136 160 326 90.55555556%

As a % of 5 stars 4.552778 Actual Rating 4

I got the actual rating by clicking in the image of the stars and then on 'View Information'

Anyway, the long and short of it is that it doesn't seem to work that way.

Anyone else got a better idea?

P.S Having 'previewed' this post I see that all my careful spacing has come to naught. Sorry.
