I'm quite new here so I'm not sure that I've got the hang of everything yet. I currently have 4 reviews and I think that when I have 5 I should be able to delete one.....Deleting the weakest will obviously improve my average (I will note down the feedback though as I don't want to lose that). Is there a way of telling which reviewer scored you the lowest? (I can't tell from the review text.)

Or is it possible to "save" my delete option and delete review 6 or 7 if they turn out to be bad?

Hi there - when you get your fifth review, you'll also get an email telling you that the 'remove review' function is open. When you go into your reviews, one of the reviews will be highlighted as your lowest scoring. It's up to you if you delete it at that point or wait until you've had more. Sometimes I reckon it's best not to tempt fate - don't know how many times I've removed a review only to have the next one even worse!!

Thanks! That's really useful...I was thinking I might just have to guess which one to delete, which would have been a bit of a risk
The fifth one will probably be awful now I've been considering deleting one of the others!

You might consider tracking you first four to see what genre they write in. It will give you an idea as to what they don't like.

Don't delete the worst one. Once your scoring kicks in you need to keep a record of both the reviews and the scoring. It will give you a good record of who has scored what. Maintain this record for each subsequent review. Choose to delete the reviews that are in the mid threes or twos, if you should be so unlucky. The lower ones will be discounted by the system. Discounting the lowest one will bring the medium ones into play, so don't do it. Hope this helps.

I, too, have often deleted the lowest one only to get a worse one almost straight away. It's worth holding on to your remove review functions, I think, maybe until you have ten or twelve reviews. You'll then be able to remove whichever two you want.

It's not always best to remove the lowest one either, especially not if it's far below any of the others. Apparently then, it doesn't even count as it's an outlier so you'd be wasting the function.

Eek! Think I've probably confused matters. I'll shut up now.

It’s not always best to delete the lowest score. It’s not always best to delete the next lowest score either. Two seemingly contradictory statements on the face of it; not if you understand statistics and math.

Delete the lowest score if all your scores are grouped together. That should push your ‘average’ score a bit higher (how far depends on the scores and how many numbers you’re averaging; lots of reviews, little increase, fewer reviews, greater increase).

Delete the second lowest score if by deleting it you will create an ‘outlier’ of the lowest score. If in doubt about what constitutes an outlier, perform a Grubb’s Test. Here’s a link to a handy calculator that will perform the Grubb’s Test for you: Grubb's Test It will also produce the mean score. Note: sometimes there aren’t outliers and all numbers are averaged together.

Having said all that, YWO employs a weighing system for different categories. I don’t know the category weighing; meaning that the above is only true most of the time, not all of the time.

NB: The scores/rankings are a minor consideration next to the feedback you get. While getting in the TT is nice (and useful for the pro crit), only a handful of members have managed a publishing deal out of it (I had an agent contact me when one work was number 14, but nothing came out of another work that was ranked numbers 2 and 3). That doesn’t mean don’t try if you’re feeling particularly competitive, it just means don’t get hung up on the charts and lose sight of that which is more important.

I used to work out the best one to delete, and there was even a spreadsheet floating around here which assisted you. However I found that it can go horribly wrong, particularly when you are deleting one from the first 3 that you cant see the scores. Nowadays I just delete the lowest, as over the longer term this is the better strategy as your mean average (which determines what scores are actually used) increases, whereas deleting a mid range actually decreases it. This can be useful in the short term (as the mid range is knocked out and the lowest score is not used because it is outside of the range) but in the long term it will make your score worse.

I tried to post a query on the Help Forum section of the mesage board earlier today because my book has got 12 reveiws and I have removed one (when I was on about 7, I think) but the 'remove review' function has not appeared again and I must be entitled to remove another.

Hi Penny, I just took a peep at your stats and you've already removed 2 reviews. You'd had 13 on that particular piece. You only get to remove 1 in 5 so you'll need 2 more before you can remove another. Hope that helps. Pam.

Had a question which no longer needs to be answered, as I just received a review.
