.
I've been longlisted for this (although I can't shake the suspicion that the longlist probably isn't much shorter than the entire list of entrants) - I wondered if any of the other names on the link below are YWO-ers, prepared to blow their cover?

Well, that's annoying for you PERRY.

Not sure where I heard about it - I think it was writing.ie (who also give away lots of lovely books in competitions).

Yes, Rose, they're not in Derry. Didn't realise that's what you meant PERRY.

Tony, I was surprised that the Doire press was not in Doire. Maybe ex-pat Doireans? (Is that a word?)

BTW, A J Black is a really cool name for a writer. Lucky you!

Don't think an ex-pat exists, Rosie, once a Paddy always a paddy.

Maybe they take their name from the Irish meaning of doire ie, oak wood/oak tree (correct me if I'm wrong Perry) and not the city. Are they using an oak tree as their logo by any chance?

Ha ha Rose - I hate my name, as I think most people do!

I can't write as "Tony Black", which I'm known as, because there's a (fairly successful) Scottish crime writer of that name. I thought A J Black sounded a little pompous, and a lot too much like A J Cronin, so I plumped for A. Joseph Black (if it's good enough for T. Coraghessan Boyle, it's certainly good enough for me). It reminds me, too, of my Primary Four teacher who - nearly forty years ago - said I always had my head in a book, and christened me "Joseph the Dreamer".

I'm completely crap at names for my characters. I always end up calling my MC Martin Kelly and my FC Nuala!!!

Actually, how do other people on here come up with character names? I thought at one time of using the names of "people" who'd sent me emails in my Spam folder, but they were all too silly.

Having only one novel, I don't have that much experience. Some of my characters are historical so their names are already chosen. That was a problem in itself, because the Norman rulers used very few names. For example. King Henry I's mother was called Matilda, so was his wife, and so was his daughter, so was his granddaughter, and his nephew's wife.

One guy had two sons. He named both of them Roger in case one died.
Half the barons in Cheshire were called Hugh.

For the fictional medievals, I consulted lists of names drawn from tax rolls in medieval England. For the 21C Americans, names that weren't used in medieval England but are used now. My main character's name is Dickensian, though for those who don't realize the symbolism, it just appears to be an ordinary name.
