I take it we're not limiting ourselves to chart singles, just music that got known through one way or another.

I quite fancied giving Spizzenergi's Where's Captain Kirk a go, if I can work out a scenario based upon it.

Otherwise it'll have to be Jello Biafra and DOA's Full Metal Jackoff

Ahhh, who am I kidding, it's gotta to be Urban Guerilla by good ol' Hawkwind.

All those that you mention qualify in my opinion.

I won't do anything just yet.
1) Have YWO expressed their opinion. If they're up for it, I assume all contributions will have to be from YWO members, not unreasonably
2) If YWO are interested, a post from them like for this current short story/The Times competition should focus eyes in.
3) What total wordage are we looking for across all stories? ie 50,000/60,000 words? That will tell us how many stories we require.

In answer to your points;
1) So far I have only asked YWO about self-publishing. This is not possible until 2010 due to demand. Any contributors who are not members of YWO could post their contribution to the site and become members.
2) The YWO involvement that I envisage would be mainly in allowing the use of their name and logo as part of the marketing and publicity. Apart from e-mailing Ted, how do you contact YWO to get them to post something?
3) If we take an average length of 3,500 words per story, then I think about 15 will be enough. I don't see any reason why people can't contribute more than one story, if we don't hit the target, or other forms such as verse that you mentioned.

Was it them who did a song about playing Risk?

Shhh - you'll have Nick all excited again!

I sat and thought about what song and recalled walking into a fave club of mine back in Limerick one night, and as I climbed the stairs, the DJ opened with it - I got up those stairs in bloody record time!

Searching around today, I even ordered myself a t-shirt!

Glad you approve dear sir.

Ant - the deed is done.

http://sulcicollective.blogspot.com/2009/10/hotel-cns.html

The piece is called "Hotel C.N.S"

I have read 'Hotel C.N.S'

A very powerful piece of writing. It made me think of the Black Hole of Calcutta, John Mclean, John McCarthy, Terry Waite, Brian Keenan, the hostage currently held in Iraq, the Israeli soldier held for three years. Richard the Lionheart, Merlin trapped forever.

At my old school gate (comprehensive, nothing special) is a concrete and steel sculpture that was somebody's 'O' level art project thirty years ago. It would take an atom bomb to remove. It is a steel tripod merging to an arrow pointing at the sky. Each foot of the tripod is set in a concrete block and originally bedecked with barbed wire, although this has gone due to health and safety. It is called 'Towards Freedom' and hints that the only thing a prisoner can see from his or her cell is the sky.

Your story made me think of that sculpture.

Would anybody else like to contribute a short story to an anthology for self publication? So far, six YWO writers have expressed an interest but more are needed to make the project viable.

The story should meet the YWO definition of a short story and must be inspired by the lyrics of a pop/rock song.

An additional thought Ant - how about we all do a story each and then one more. The second would be each person's take on a single song, so you'd also get six quite different views of what one song can mean.

As to how that song might be chosen...well...that will be a tale in itself.
