I have recently posted a short story (The old boy from Brazil, well worth a look at I would say) which was inspired by the lyrics from a song by The Clash.

Then I thought that a collection of stories inspired by pop/rock lyrics might make an interesting read (Pop Fiction?) especially if they were by different authors writing in different styles and genres but all part of YWO.

I don't suppose this idea is particularly original but what do you writers out there think? Anyone interested?

I am, and I'd like to baggsy Prince's When Doves Cry before Karen Milner gets here.

Oh, brilliant! Are you serious? I was about fourteen when this came out and my friends and I used to do a really cool dance to it. Well, we thought so anyway.

I'm up for it. Worked 20 years in the music biz till this year. Would have to think long and hard about which song. I did write a play about A Joy Division fan many moons ago...

Didn't Nick Hornby do something about 30 songs for charity? Not sure if it was fiction or having 30 writers write about their favourite song and what it meant to them.

Of course you realise that any such literary-music collaboration will probably be killed off by the cost of permissions to quote lyrics? It is very bloody expensive. 20/30 stories, each with a quote, makes it uneconomical I'd say.

Antcity said inspired by lyrics. We'll just have to be sneaky how we incorporate them.

Btw, I'm glad you had a good day. Did you do your reading with or without a balaclava?

ha ha ha. It was after the panel and it was unplanned - an open mic session, so I didn't have it on me.

I am debating whether to wear the stocking over my head when I give planned readings, seeing as the character is a) married to a gangster and b) on the run from him and seeking anonymity.

But maybe in public it is just a bit too pervy?

Plus with the lights down, and the gauzey twill, I just might not be able to see my damn words to read them

Oh shit!

I'm glad there is some interest in this idea but now we'll have to think about making it work. Having read Sulcus' FW of my story, I think I need to listen to lots more music!

The rules - story inspired by pop lyric but does not have to contain them.

How many stories do you think we'll need? How do we select the ones to use without upsetting me (sorry, I mean without upsetting other people)? Do we need Ted's approval to do it under the YWO banner?
