Dear fellow writers,

Do I have to wait till my ms is finished to contact agents?
A friend of mine got an agent before completing her first book two years ago but I believe things have changed now.

The truth is, having an agent would be the perfect bum glue for me. I fell out of my book after a long illness and find it hard to get back to it.

I would also be more comfortable spending some time writing if I didn't feel like I might only be wasting my time.

Guess what I need is actually faith in myself, not an agent, not yet anyway

It all depends on the agent. You will need to do your homework and try your luck. Some agents will pick you up based on sample writing and an idea, whereas a lot of agents instead want the finished manuscript so that they have more of a full picture when it comes to your book. You need to look into different agents, see if you can find out what they accept from books or websites and if not there is no harm in sending them a friendly email.

A friend of mine was recently signed by a well known London agency on the strength of just three chapters. In turn, her agent secured her a publishing deal on the first twenty-five thousand words of what will be a hundred thousand word book.
