Hey Marc. Do you have any objection to my printing off sixteen sets of the opening to A, B & E along with some of the reviews, good and bad?

It’s for the Book Appreciation Club held in the shop the first Wednesday evening of every month. Sorry to have left it so late but it struck me it would be rude/wrong not to get your go ahead.

I will read from the copy I have of the book (wearing a balaklava, of course) but would like everyone to be able to follow (hopefully, lol!) from the sheets.

The purpose of the club is to allow readers to experience and discuss all the various genres, sub genres and sub, sub genres. They said they wanted to try something experimental/alternative and you just sorta popped into my head.

Tempy, please be my guest! I would love to be a fly on your bookshop wall!

Let me know how it goes.

Great! I'm really looking foward to seeing how they react as it will be something very different for them. We always have wine but I may get in something stronger in case of medical emergencies. Lol

I'll report back tomorrow afternoon. My toes have a hospital appointment in the morning.

Hey Marc. Oh, it was fun! Talk about the fazed, dazed and amazed of Ordinary Town!

They threw themselves into it with enthusiasm and determination, mainly because I’d warned it wasn’t for ‘lightweights’ and no one wanted to be labelled as one.

My performance was impressive even if I say so myself and by the end of it they didn’t seem to know what to say. I whipped out the reviews which got them going. They agreed or disagreed with the comments and then with each other. They struggled with the lack of dialogue but liked the humour. The prose was denser than anything they had ever read before and they enjoyed having to work at a piece rather then it just washing over them.

They all went off clasping their sheets so they could go over it again in the comfort of their own padded cells, I mean homes. I pointed them in the direction of YouTube so they could watch you do your thing and that seemed to appeal.

Given these readers are so not your target market I think you went down really well. If provoking strong feelings and making people really think about what they are reading are your aims then you succeeded here last night.

In recognition of the entertainment you have afforded me I’m putting A, B & E
on the Tempting Titles chalkboard for a while. Hope it brings you some sales.

Best part of the evening was when, as she left, the oldest of the group put her hand on my arm and asked in a concerned tone, “And you know this man?”

Lol

Sounds an absolute riot and a hoot. It does suggest my belief about an audience being there in some shape or form, for as you say it probably wasn't the target demographic, but they were still able to engage with it to some extent.

Sadly, at the moment on my YouTube site, none of the readings are from the novel. Those ones are still being edited together.

Thanks for the exposure.

Forgot to mention how someone said he found it easier to follow than Wolf Hall.

Make of that what you will. Lol

My father bought my wife Wolf Hall for her birthday. She gave it to someone else unread. Says a lot about their relationship. Luckily he hadn't inscribed it on the inside cover...

Last month's topic was prize wining books so amongst others we looked at Wolf Hall.

Like so many award winning novels it does attract extreme opinions. It makes me wonder if a) people set their minds against them because they have won a prize or b) rave about them because they think it must be good.

The question I'm often asked is exactly what the panel of judges are looking for, and I'm blowed if I can work it out.

I'm just not interested because its HF. One of her earlier books was on my list, one about magic I think, but someone put me off it and I've never actually pursued her as a reader.

Have read the new Don Dellilo. The greatest living American author in my opinion and he delivers yet again. masterful.

Sulcus . . . is your book-trailer up? Is that what Tempy is referring to?
I must have missed the detail. Would love to see it.
