I've written the first chapter of a book I'd classify as "high concept", i.e. the idea of the book is strong. I'm wary of putting it up here in case someone uses the idea and writes the book up quicker than I could currently manager. This is a very supportive environment, and I wouldn't expect that to happen - but do I have any protection to prevent it happening? Any thoughts/advise much appreciated.

Hey AJ. It isn't possible to copyright an idea. Or a title, I believe. There isn't any way to stop someone using it as long as they don't actually steal your words, so to speak. It's often said that an unpublished writer should pray to be plagiarized as your likely to earn far more money by suing! Bit of an urban myth that it happens very often as most writers are brimfull of their own ideas. Tempy x

If it's a really good idea, then just email it to Dan Brown and pray to God that he writes another book cause he (and you, if you play your cards right) will earn more money out of it than you'd ever hope to on your own.

Relax, get it uploaded and enjoy the experience of peer reviews.

Ah, you're all very good. Hope I didn't mistakenly give the impression I thought this might happen - it's just my (decent) ideas are rare beasts and it would kill me to give away the best one I've had yet! Thanks for all the responses. Think I'll just get it up here and you can all say, "Seriously, you thought THAT was a good idea ??!!!!!??"
