This is a sort of an APB regarding a very dangerous insect that loves warm moist areas and climate, it is called the Blandford Fly whose origins began in Dorset although it is the same specie that causes river Blindness in Africa so while the female of the species, before it mates, prefers to suck your blood from the ankle, it is not too particular. In my case it was the ankle and it leaves behind, a very nasty payload of bacteria as it prefers stagnant, moist clammy areas. I had my welly boots on and it still managed to bite me when I was looking for an escaped cat. It has now laid me up for two weeks, I am on the second course of antibiotics, skin is peeling off me and I cannot put on a shoe as there is a tight area of skin. It is no more than 2-3mm[Go to Wikki and at the bottom, you will get an idea of its size which is not big but it can be magnified by clicking with your mouse. If you are unlucky to feel it, get to the doctor quickly or call him/her in if you do not have transport for likely as not, the symptoms will manifest itself in your stomach as well as where you have been bitten, you will be boiling hot one minute 38c[10.2F] then go into convulsive shivering the next. Do not hesitate. Your joints and lymph glands will tell you as well that something is wrong. These are NASTY and while I do not want to scare people, they have killed people in Dorset. There were questions asked in the house and local environmental authorities had to spray reed beds with a special insecticide to kill off the eggs and the fly. If you do have a water feature, perhaps keeping carp or other fish would be the answer than simply letting nature in voluntarily as you might get more than you bargain for as the fish will disturb the surface and perhaps eat the eggs.

Sorry, wrong cartoon strip It's the park warden of Jellystone that Yogi needs to tell, Ranger Smith. Let's hope that Boo Boo wasn't bitten as well, as Yogi is much tougher, and can take it Officer Dibble is the policeman in Top Cat.

Hot and wet - it's fly heaven at the mo. The horses are wearing so much mesh it's like a beekeepers' convention in that field.

There is a black fly in our part in Spain, which looks like a very small house fly and is known to the locals as 'Flying Teeth'. I was bitten by one on the ankle two years ago, the bite was extremely irritating and became infected. Nasty. I was on antibiotics for a while and my skin took a long time to heal.
