This is really well written comedy, with situations and gags seeded way back in the text before being harvested when they are plump and ripe.

The idea of hopeless and drunk typist who never the less consistently saves the day is a great one.

Just read it for fun.

Many thanks for posting this Andrew - and for the great review.

Strangely, this didn't start out as a comedy. It comes soon after a pretty bleak incident in Jessie's life. But the houseboy went and surprised me by coming out with that line 'It is no longer dead', so I changed gear and rewrote it for fun.

I've found that very often stories evolve from one particular phrase or (more likely) a single line of dialogue.

I think you are right about the story taking charge.

This could so easily be a story about a disillusioned typist, but it rises way above that when the typist, despite being drunk and quite hopeless at her alleged job, reveals a knack for solving life's troubles... at least when visited upon someone else. Even if someone else is eminently unworthy. A bit like a disorganized witch whose cauldron keeps boiling over and whose magic is somewhat random but who somehow does the right thing in the end.

Good luck, I loved it.

Not sure that I would class this as comedy but it is a fine piece of writing.

Finally. Something we can all agree on.

Everything I've read by this author has been a fine piece of writing. She's one of the best around, and her crits are good, too.
