Hello, just wondering what fellow YWO published writers' experience of bookshop sales is.
On every occasion someone has tried to order my novel, After Goya, through Waterstone's, Blackwell's and WH Smith the potential purchaser has been told that it will take 3 to 4 weeks, and, in the case of Blackwell's (Oxford) 4 to 6 weeks. Every bookshop has told them to order it online. And, when they then go to Amazon the page often says not in stock usually dispatched within 1 to 3 weeks.
Is this usual? What has been your experience of people trying to order your book through a bookshop in the UK? Appreciate all replies. Thanks.

Welcome to the world of POD. Print on demand is exactly what is says. You "demand" (buy) the book and then it will be printed. Unfortunately this takes a few weeks.

Not sure why Amazon says non in stock. It does that occasionally to me too, but you can still order and it will arrive.

I recommend you looking into Kindle printing on Amazon. This works alongside your printed book, and in my case, is works better.

Hi, thanks Lou, I'm aware about the stock limitations of POD books. However, Lightning Source, YWO's printers, quote 2 business days (not 4 weeks) from receipt of order. Here's what it says on their website:
From receipt and acceptance of the order (from
wholesaler/distributor/retailer/bookseller), to the shipment of the order (to the wholesaler/distributor/retailer/bookseller)
2 business days/5 business days. Regards

Whenever I've ordered any of mine or customers have ordered them, they've usually arrived pretty quickly. There's never been a problem. But Louise is right, go for Kindle too. It's a great option for your readers. Good luck. Don't forget to promote your book on the Amazon forums so people know it's out there.

If you have any sort of physical copy of your book, it will have an ISBN. soon after this number is registered, your book will appear on Amazon whSmiths and others, with the 'out of stock' available in 4-6 weeks. This is actually a blatant lie. They have no idea if they will ever be able to supply the book. If however someone tries to buy the book, they just contact Neilson (for UK books) and Neilson just email the publisher with a request for the book.

Now the publisher may be big, independent, or POD and I assume that as a supply chain is established, the information of availability is amended, but as I say, I only assume this as I am at the stage where I have oredered one of my own books from WHsmith, in the knowledge that I am the only publisher and I haven't printed my books yet.

(BTW. I have approved the proof, and 200 paperbacks should be arriving next week
