Amazon are their own worst enemy when it comes to pushing things like "Search Inside." It sounds SO difficult. In fact, as antony kept telling me, it's SO easy.

The way to do it is this:

- Ignore all amazon's specifications for pdfs, jpgs and any other letters of the alphabet.
- Sign up (they talk you through that bit)
- Send in your book as published (I didn't have the pdf, so Ted very kindly emailed it to me), also the jpg of your front cover and the jpg of your back cover (+ the jpg of your spine if you want to).
- Make sure each of the documents is named appropriately: eg ISBNfrontcover, ISBNbackcover, etc (amazon tells you exactly what the names have to be).

And that's it. In the end, I was able to do it all myself (thanks, Ann Swinfen, for persuading me to have a go!)

I signed up with amazon.com. To sign up with amazon.co.uk as well, simply email the "Search Inside" people (there's a "Contact Us" box to click) and tell them that you want to do that. All they need is your ISBN, and within a couple of hours it's all done for you.

I have submitted 'Timescope' for Search inside. It looked complex, but was, in essence easy. Just label the files according to their convention, zip them up and send them off. The tricky bit for me was getting round to it, the first search inside application lapsed, but they revived it when I asked them. Now, the function is available on the title.

Summary: superficially difficult, but go for it - it does work!

I didn't even do the "zip" bit - wouldn't know how!

I think the whole problem with Search Inside is that the instructions are written by computer nerds. If you can manage to pick out and translate into plain English the only bits that actually matter, which are "Send your book and covers as published" and "Put the ISBN in the file titles" then it works just fine.

If you have a moment and want a good laugh, ask them for the instructions for sending your book in as hard copy instead. It's hard to believe, but they are even longer, more complex and more incomprehensible than the instructions for electronic submission.
