Because I can read emails but not reply, not can I write a new email. Is it just me or is it happening to anybody else?

I just tried, Dai, and couldn't access my account so may not be just you. Mine was working fine earlier though. The message said they were experiencing technical difficulties!

PS I've used Yahoo for 15 years and this it the first time it's happened.

Mine's okay now too but I have had a few problems with yahoo before so may think of changing. Such a nuisance when it doesn't work. Scary how reliant we get on technology, isn't it?

Scary how reliant we get on technology, isn't it? Problem is I guess, there are hundreds of people all over the place who I contact, not frequently, but on a now and then basis, who have my email address as what it is and what it has been. So I am reluctant to change. Maybe the longer you have an email address the more it gets 'embedded'.

It took about a year for me to stop getting emails at my old email address after I switched over. On the up side, you stop hearing from those you never liked hearing from in the first place. Gmail makes it as easy as possible to switch. You can export your Yahoo contacts as a csv file then import into Gmail. You can also get mail redirected into Gmail from other accounts, and I think Yahoo is probably one of them. I've been using Gmail for five years and I'm really impressed with it. It also integrates well with other google services, if you happen to be using them.
