This Guardian Book Blog raised interesting comments - and YWO gets a mention (I see some regulars have commented).

Oh my god! thank you HJW you have ruined my morning!
I had hoped that most of these people had died
choking on their own bile since Xmas-alas upon reading said blog (blogs are something I usually avoid like the plague) I fear that the drivel and vitriol still pervades.
Have a nice Easter and read a nice book

The usual 'he said, she said, i know you don't know, this is good, this is bad, black and white extreme thinking'- mostly twaddle and drivel from folk with way too much time on their hands and who have little appreciation that the pulishing industry is lagging behind other creative mediums in allowing the creative process to benefit the artist/writer and not the 'distribtion channel'

But equally - all miss the point, the product , no matter how it is produced and shared, still has to be good. There are far more pants and atrocious bands/music on MySpace et al than great talent that is discovered. For us writers, the internet, POD, vanity publishing and the YWO offers the same opportunity and pitfalls.

I salute it and thank it for giving me an opportunity to be read.

Good luck to all that publish, POD, blog or whatever... the public will decide...

I thought this "debate" was a little less frantic than others I have read...

Still, the last few posts seem to put the record straight for YWO, there is even a few quotes from the feedback attached to Jane's article... My name is even in there, albeit spelt incorrectly. Doh!

I think it will always be one of those things that when YWO is mentioned, an argument will begin. The sad thing to me is that some of the very good books in YWO will have been tainted by those who have never even picked one up, but have decided in advance that they are rubbish.

It's a jealously thing too, imo. Those who've watched others take up the YWO offer may think they've entered publishing through the back door, so to speak.

The YWO and Legend team have worked brilliantly hard to get this venture off the ground. 5000 published in two months was very naive, and those complaining are just as naive to believe it could happen!

But I was so glad to be part of it. It made me believe in myself once again, and also made people see how serious I was about writing (before it was "just a little hobby".

I just wish people would stop bitching about it now. We're all adults and quite capable of making our own mistakes (or not).
