I keep getting a message on my laptop saying there's an IP address conflict. Does anyone know what that is? It says to contact my administrator. Didn't know I had one!!!!

Hi Beth, I've emailed you with a little info I discovered on the net. Thought it easier than trying to write it all here. Hope it helps. Catherine

Thanks, Catherine. I keep ignoring it but now I'm thinking maybe that's not a good idea. Wish I wasn't such a dunce with computers. Off to read it now.

Your IP address is your net ID. It might be that someone else is using that identifier. What sort of security programme do you have on your PC/whatever? It could be phishing by some scammer or - if you're operating from another computer - simply that someone at home is on the line at the same time. Since it suggests that you contact your administrator (that's you, the owner of the computer - you set this up when booting up when you first got the computer, and should have a password somewhere) the latter seems more likely. Hope that helps.

It works on wi-fi from the PC but sometimes the kids are also using their laptops on the same wi-fi. I'm hoping it's just that. Thanks for the info about the administrator btw. Beth

All machines on a network either have or are given an IP address. The problem is that many devices assume they can become 192.168.0.1. So, a new printer might take this address and then your pc might also take it. As only one device should have the address the one with the most intelligence tells you that it has a conflict.
Common cause is that somebody has set a fixed IP address on two machines. They will both work happily except when they are switched on at the same time. Next common cause is a thing called DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) has handed out the same address to two DHCP enabled devices.
Sorry there isn’t a quick “do this,” answer, but assuming that you don’t have a large network it should be easy to track down by checking the network settings on each device.
If you really do only have one pc – I guess a wireless connection, you should check that it has security switched on in case somebody from nearby is using your wireless either by accident or maliciously. If it is set up with no password and no security…

Poor Beth, Kids and computors simply don't mix. Well done for your Top 5 place - one up for Wales! There is one YWO user who has a hotmail address, He lives near me, and we were corresponding via mail, something infiltrated his system - and everybody on his mail list got scam stuff. All my husbands buisness clients who are on my mail address (he's an engineer) and YWO users were suddenly offered life enhancing treatments in his name! Story there anyone? I have sophos in place - it's cast iron stuff used by secondary schools, and even that couldn't deal with that one. Beth - get your teens a dongle each and let them create their own viruses, leaving you to write in peace! All the best Carola
